Hiking - Hiking Adventure - Hiking Trail - Mountain Hiking Hiking Safety - Hiking Clothes - Hiking Gear - Moonlight Hiking ![]() RRP $27.50 ![]() "Adventures on Small Islands: A Fresh Look at Greece" was intended as both and adventure story undertaken by two "old" ladies, and a story about a way of life that is vanishing, as these ten small Greek islands get caught up in the march of "progress" and thus lose the vary quality that once made them unique. The trips were undertaken over a six-year period and involved travelling "rough" - i.e. with just a rucksack; no mode of travel other than hiking, hitch-hiking, or an occasional bus; staying in village homes and trying to get to know as many loval people as possible in the weeks spent living on these islands. The islands were chosen because they are small and because neither Rhea nor Haris had previously visited them, thus no memories from the past would impinge on the "fresh look." They are not the big tourist islands that have changed Greek life in a way that many people do not like. Unfortunately, even these small islands are in the process of being "discovered" and are already changing in the past few years. So this adventure story becomes part of past history. The text of the book is taken from Haris' diaries, many pages of notes every day, and the illustrations are Rhea's. We had a lot of good times and memorable experiences on these small Greek islands, and we hope people both enjoy reading about them and get a flavour of the lives lived there. And maybe even grab a rucksack and head off to Greece to visit them! RRP $18.65 ![]() In the book, "Hiking Sipsey-A Family's Fight for Eastern Wilderness," Rickey Butch Walker teams with Jim Manasco to produce an ultimate guide to the Bankhead National Forest which includes the Sipsey Wilderness Area. You will read of the efforts of those who cherished the unique treasures found in the Bankhead Forest and launched a determined and successful campaign to preserve it for this, and subsequent, generations. With the attitude that anything of value this great is worth fighting for, the Sipsey Wilderness was established. Meet the family of Jim and Ruth Manasco who have dedicated their life's work to preserve the natural beauties of the Warrior Mountains and the Rocky Plains. Follow the struggle to designate the heart of the Bankhead, the crown jewel of the forest, as a wilderness area so that it might return to its primitive state, that which proceeded the effort to turn it into a pine plantation. The book allows the reader to walk the trails of the forest and smell the wildflowers that grow in profusion within its boundaries-look but don't pick! Through words you visualize the habitat of the forest, listen to birds sing, frogs croak and the hoot of an owl. Read the messages left on the ancient Beech trees and recognize the different species of vegetation by examining the leaves and bark of the plant. Search for the herbal plants such as ginseng-but no digging allowed! Let the great variety of moss amaze you, but in all this, be careful to preserve this treasure for future generations.
